Technology has become inexorably woven into the fabric of our lives.  Everything we do engages technology, more increasingly the world around us uses technology to engages us.  Everything about us is recorded somewhere, in some database.  From our medical history, our financial information, where we frequent, what we buy, even our vacation and pet images are stored, capable of piecing together the personal details by which we can be identified.

Personally identifiable information (PII) is any information that can be used to identify, contact, or locate an individual, either alone or combined with other easily accessible sources. It includes information that is linked or linkable to an individual, such as medical, educational, financial and employment information.”

Each of us expects the companies and institutions that we entrust with our data, to handle and safeguard it responsibly.  For many industries, the imperative to appropriately handle the PII in their possession is law.  Regulations such as FINRA, SEC, HIPPA and PCI govern how these organizations process and store the data in their care.

These compliance requirements are far reaching and layered.  Sincere investment, on the part of the complying business, practice or institution, must be made in establishing the controls and systems necessary to meet, and adhere to, the legislation.  For smaller organizations the measures can be daunting.
